New planning laws come into force

New planning laws took effect on 1 October 2008. These allow for certain types of extensions, loft conversions etc to take place without the need for planning permission. However it isn’t a free-for-all as there are strict limits on what you can do under this new scheme. For example if you are extending to within 2 metres of your property boundary, the maximum eaves height (from the ground to the bottom of the roof) is 3 metres. The maximum depth of a rear extension is 3 metres. These and many other rules mean that planning permission will still be required for many projects in our area where most homes are terraced houses. Most building work will still need to pass building regulations too. To find out more visit the Government’s planning portal which has lots of useful guidance.
