Missing cat – have you seen it?

A cat has gone missing from the FARA area. The cat pictured is missing from the top of Montague Road, where it borders Wanstead Flats.

The cat is black and white, and notably has an all-black nose. He answers to the name of Ben.

Please check your sheds in case he’s trapped inside!

If you find Ben, please call 07765 004602 – even if the worst has happened his owner wants to know.

Farewell to Mario

We hear that Mario of Mario’s barber shop is retiring on 29th May and handing over to his son Costa.

We at FARA would like to express our appreciation for the support Mario has given by publicising local events and generally acting as a focal point for the community for many years. We wish him a happy retirement, and good luck to Costa and the barber shop.

Snow is coming – let’s get salting!

The Met Office is expecting heavy snowfall across London tonight and in the coming days.

To clear your driveway or the pavement outside your home, you can collect bags of salt from bins at the bus station on Kirkdale Road, and the bus station on the other side of the tube on Grove Green Road. The bins contain 15kg bags of salt, so you may wish to drive or get the bus home with one! The council has said that they will endeavour to keep the bins stocked throughout the cold weather.

Please do clear the pavement outside your house if you can: first sweep the snow off, then lay down some salt to deal with any residual snow or ice. Although snow looks pretty, compacted snow and ice can be dangerous to walk on, and for elderly and disabled people it may be impossible and mean they are unable to leave the house. Let’s see if we can keep the Ferndale Area pavements clear, so that everyone can come and go safely!

[Update on 6 January: The bins are now being stocked with loose salt so you may wish to take a bag and scoop out with you.]

Do you want a car club in our area?

The car club Streetcar wants to come to Waltham Forest and the council has identified several places across the borough where their cars might be parked. One of these places  is at the top of Ferndale Road between the High Road and number 2. If successful, two parking spaces would be marked as dedicated car club bays, and only car club hire cars could park there.

It is already quite hard to find a parking space in Ferndale Road, and a couple of parking spaces would be lost if this scheme goes ahead. Then again, perhaps it would encourage people to give up their cars and so relieve the pressure on parking spaces?

Whatever you think, the council want to know.

You can find out more on the council’s website:
http://www.walthamforest.gov.uk/car-clubs
where you can download a questionnaire, and find more information about the proposed bays (including this PDF document relating to the proposed bays in Ferndale Road).

The deadline for responses to the council is 2 February.

How clean is your local restaurant?

You can now read the results of food hygiene inspections online, in an initiative called “scores on the doors”. This covers everywhere that serves food, from shops through to restaurants.

The scores are awarded with 5 stars being the best (Excellent: Very high standards of food safety management. Fully compliant with food safety legislation) through to no stars (Very poor: A general failure to comply with legal requirements. Little or no appreciation of food safety. Major effort required).

Flash Bristow has looked at the scores for premises near the FARA area.

The winners are…

Best Pubs: Walnut Tree (4 stars), O’Neills (3)
Best Chicken / Kebab takeaways: McDonalds (4 stars), KFC (3)
Best Cafes: George’s Cafe (3 stars), Subway (3)
Best Restaurants: Ichiban (4 stars), Golden Curry (3), Elche (3), Singburi (3), Mudra (3)

All others scored 2 or below (note: a few scores were not available, including New Golden Orient and Horizon). The only food outlet in Leytonstone to score 5 points was Whipps Cross Hospital Kitchen.

Ones to avoid – these scored NO stars…

Chopsticks
Kirkdales Wine Bar
Lincolns
Le Parisien Cafe

Did your favourite restaurant score top marks?
Perhaps it’s time to try out one of the winners!
