FARA operates a buddy scheme, inspired by the NHS flu buddy system. The idea is that if a FARA member is ill or temporarily incapacitated (e.g. by a broken leg), they can be paired with a “buddy” who can fetch medicines and other essential items for them.
In order for the scheme to work effectively we have a few simple rules:
If you need a buddy…
- The buddy system is only for temporary illness. If you have longer term needs, please contact Social Services
- The buddy cannot provide “care” e.g. assistance with personal needs or household tasks.
- You can expect your buddy to collect prescriptions, and a few essential items such as fresh milk and bread, but not a long shopping list! If you have a longer list, please try shopping online.
- You must reimburse your buddy for the cost of any items they obtain for you.
- You do not need to pay your buddy for their time – they are volunteering for free.
If you are a buddy…
- You should be willing to pick up a prescription from the doctor and collect the medicine from a chemist. You may also be asked to obtain a few small items such as fresh milk and bread, but not more than a handful of items.
- The person you are buddying should reimburse you for the cost of any items you obtain, including medicine. You should ask them beforehand to see if they have a prescription pre-payment certificate or any exemption from prescription charges.
- If you are asked to help for longer than a week please let us know, as the buddy scheme is only intended to cover emergencies and short-term illness.
- If you have any questions at any time, please contact FARA.
We already have volunteers who are willing to help, so if you are in need of a buddy, or know a neighbour who is in need of help, please contact FARA: by email info@fara-leytonstone.org.uk or phone 07939 579090 (afternoons only).
We would also welcome other volunteers who can be added to our list of potential buddys.
