Wanstead Flats Playing Fields – learn more and have your say

The City of London, who manage Wanstead Flats, would like to know what people think about the playing fields. Local residents are invited to an open day at Harrow Road Meeting Room (in the changing room complex), on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 February. Drop in between 10am and 3pm to see their plans and have your say.

Snow is coming – let’s get salting!

The Met Office is expecting heavy snowfall across London tonight and in the coming days.

To clear your driveway or the pavement outside your home, you can collect bags of salt from bins at the bus station on Kirkdale Road, and the bus station on the other side of the tube on Grove Green Road. The bins contain 15kg bags of salt, so you may wish to drive or get the bus home with one! The council has said that they will endeavour to keep the bins stocked throughout the cold weather.

Please do clear the pavement outside your house if you can: first sweep the snow off, then lay down some salt to deal with any residual snow or ice. Although snow looks pretty, compacted snow and ice can be dangerous to walk on, and for elderly and disabled people it may be impossible and mean they are unable to leave the house. Let’s see if we can keep the Ferndale Area pavements clear, so that everyone can come and go safely!

Panto tickets prize draw

Woodhouse Players have kindly given FARA a 4-person family ticket to their fab panto ‘Cinderella’. The ticket is for any of the four performances which are on 1st/2nd/7th/8th January 2010.

Anyone living in the FARA area is eligible to enter our prize draw to win these tickets. Simply email your name/address with ‘Panto’ in the subject line to info@fara-leytonstone.org.uk. First entry out of the hat on the evening of Sunday 22th November wins the tickets.

Quiz team members wanted for 28th November

Bushwood Residents Association have once again invited FARA members to join them for their next quiz night which will be held on Saturday 28th November at 7.30pm. The last time we fielded a team we managed to reach the dizzying heights of 2nd place, thanks to a couple of (much) younger residents on our quiz table. Could we go one better, or at least hold on to our position on the podium? We are up to the challenge, but need some volunteers to join the quiz team.

A buffet from the Star of India will be provided on the night, and there is a £3 cost for entering the quiz or £8 including the buffet. The venue will be Leytonstone Social Club, 603 High Road (just past the railway bridge on the right).

Win Theatre Tickets

Woodhouse Players have kindly given FARA a pair of free tickets for the Saturday 7 November performance of a great new production. ‘The Lark’, a play about Joan of Arc by Jean Anouilh, mixes high drama with comedy. It presents Joan’s life in a series of flashbacks as she fights for her life before a politically-motivated Church Court. This production is the world premiere of a new English translation by a member of the Woodhouse Players.

Good news – the Leytonstone Community Council has awarded FARA £150 worth of funding towards next year’s photo competition. We hope to make it the best one yet!

Davies Lane CPZ – time to renew permits

If you are a permit holder for the CPZ covering Davies Lane, please be aware you need to renew it by 6 November. Last year quite a few residents missed the deadline and received parking tickets, so make sure you don’t get caught out this year!

Swine Flu Buddy Scheme

Photo competition winners

The FARA photo competition exhibition was held at Davies Lane Primary School today. Nearly 100 people came to see the entries and vote for the winners, who were:

Junior Prize: Jessie Moore
Junior Prize runner-up: Marie Campbell
Best Buildings: Brian Hopson
Best Buildings runner-up: Hilary Douse
Green Spaces joint winners: Flash Bristow and Brian Hopson
Hidden Gems joint winners: Wendy Brickell and Adam Brown.

The winning photos will be on show at the Epicentre next Saturday 18th July as part of ‘Leytonstone Day’ which runs from 1-6pm. We hope to also get all entries displayed in Leytonstone Library windows in due course.
